Publishing your site to the web

You will need to be able to transfer the files for your website from your computer to the server provided by your chosen web hosting service. The easiest way to transfer files on the Internet is through FTP (File Transfer Protocol). On the Internet everything has a client/server relationship. You have seen an example of this every time you open your Internet browser to surf the web. Your browser (the client) is receiving information from another website (the server). Well FTP works the same way. You utilize a client application to transfer files to and from your computer and a server on the web.

There are many FTP clients to choose from. Below are a few of the most popular. Click on the links for more information and to download the client of your choice.

There are three basic pieces of information you will need to begin using your FTP client to transfer files to your website.

Host Address
This is the URL to the server or computer that you are transferring files to. example: ftp.yourdomain.com. Your web hosting service should have provided you with this information.

Username
This is your username that you either selected when you signed up for web hosting service, or that was assigned to you by the web hosting service you signed up with.

Password
This is the password that you either selected when you signed up for web hosting service, or that was assigned to you by the web hosting service you signed up with.

Once you have obtained the required information it is time to attempt a connection with the server. Find the place in your client where you need to insert this information. In CuteFTP you can go to the file menu and select Quick Connect. This will pull up a tool bar that has forms where you can enter the proper information. Once you are connected with the server you are ready to transfer your files.

Depending on the FTP client you use, once you connect to your server, one portion of the window will be a list of the files on your own computer, and the other portion the directory list of your site files. You should be able to drag and drop the files from your computer to the web host, or select the files you want to transfer and click a transfer button. Your FTP client software should have simple instructions available on this process.

Most web hosts will also have instructions or a FAQ in their help section if you have further questions or are running into difficulties.
